Primary Purpose:
Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) is the world’s largest advocacy association representing member companies, state biotechnology groups, academic and research institutions, and related organizations across the United States and in 30+ countries. BIO members are involved in the research and development of innovative healthcare, agricultural, industrial and environmental biotechnology products. BIO also produces the BIO International Convention, the world’s largest gathering of the biotechnology industry, along with industry-leading investor and partnering meetings held around the world.
The Director of Event Marketing is responsible for the event marketing strategy and execution of programs that drive audience acquisition and retain delegate attendance across multiple marketing mediums. The incumbent develops and executes marketing plans with limited supervision and ensures that each touchpoint across the acquisition cycle is engaging, efficient, and effective. Ensures marketing best practices and quality control measures are used throughout campaigns and personally develops, executes, and manages select tactical executions including emails, web copy, and print collateral. This is a hands-on position that requires excellent copywriting skills and a thorough understanding of email marketing. During event campaigns, the Director of Event Marketing monitors campaign performance, develops optimization recommendations, and creates a final analysis post-event.
ESSENTIAL Responsibilities:
Develop and deliver multi-channel campaigns to increase awareness, engagement and growth for BIO events including:
- Directing marketing strategies and campaign calendars.
- Overall project, timeline, and workflow management.
- Developing branding and key visuals for events (in collaboration within the Event Marketing and Brand Experience team).
- Vendor and budget management and accountability.
- Vendor supervision.
- Tactical development of messaging and content for emails, web copy, mobile app, and copy for on-site materials.
- Ensure quality control of all marketing collateral.
- Collaborate with external partners and affiliates where applicable to maximize the scope and reach of campaigns.
- Segmentation of customer/attendee base and varying strategies, and identify opportunities for targeted messaging.
- Analysis to measure effectiveness, performance, and ROI for executed campaigns.
- Create, deploy, and report on attendee post-event surveys.
Oversight on email marketing platform for Event Marketing and Brand Experience team:
- Manage event integration and demographics in email platform (with IT).
- Optimize email database (with IT/outside vendor).
- Work across BIO organizationally to be aware of all emails deployed by BIO.
- Report on opt-outs across event portfolio to make recommendations on how to decrease.
- Meet as necessary with email marketing platform vendors.
Actively collaborate with cross-functional teams to align marketing campaign goals with event objectives:
- Participate in cross-discipline event planning/status meetings.
- Work with exhibition team and operations on exhibitor communications.
- Strategize social media content and cadence with Communications team.
Perform other duties, as assigned.
Required Background, EDUCATION, and skills:
- 5+ years in marketing large, multi-faceted B2B events, preferably at a trade association.
- Understanding of list segmentation and how to craft unique messages to select audiences.
- Management or mentorship of personnel.
- Collaborative workstyle.
- Strong copywriting ability.
- Visual and verbal presentation skills to present data clearly and effectively.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Microsoft Excel. Working knowledge of graphics programs like Adobe Creative Suite and Adobe PDF is a strong plus.
- Hands-on experience with marketing tools and email platforms including Marketo, Sales Force and Map Your Show.
- Critical thinking skills to assess current Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and increase efficiency whenever possible.
