About Amazon

Amazon is guided by four principles: customer obsession rather than competitor focus, passion for invention, commitment to operational excellence, and long-term thinking. We are driven by the excitement of building technologies, inventing products, and providing services that change lives. We embrace new ways of doing things, make decisions quickly, and are not afraid to fail. We have the scope and capabilities of a large company, and the spirit and heart of a small one. At Amazon, it is always "Day 1."

Role Overview

The Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) is a key executive leader responsible for driving the global brand and marketing strategy across Amazon's vast ecosystem. This includes Global Retail, Amazon Prime, Prime Video, Amazon Music, Amazon Devices (e.g., Echo, Kindle), and global sustainability initiatives. The CMO will bridge the gap between world-class creative storytelling and rigorous, data-driven performance marketing. As the chief steward of one of the world's most recognizable brands, this leader will obsess over the customer journey, drive massive global acquisition and retention efforts, and ensure Amazon's marketing investments yield maximum ROI while building long-term brand equity.

Key Responsibilities

Global Brand Strategy & Architecture

  • Serve as the ultimate guardian and champion of the Amazon brand globally, ensuring a consistent, authentic, and compelling narrative across all consumer touchpoints.
  • Lead the overarching marketing strategy for the Amazon Prime membership program, driving customer acquisition, engagement, and retention across global markets.
  • Develop cohesive brand positioning that effectively weaves together Amazon's diverse portfolio of services (retail, entertainment, devices, and grocery).

Performance Marketing & Analytics

  • Oversee a multi-billion-dollar global marketing budget, applying rigorous financial discipline and Amazon's "Frugality" principle to maximize return on ad spend (ROAS).
  • Leverage Amazon's unparalleled data infrastructure and machine learning capabilities to drive hyper-personalized marketing at scale.
  • Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for customer acquisition cost (CAC), lifetime value (LTV), and brand sentiment, reporting directly to the S-Team and Board of Directors.

Creative & Content Leadership

  • Lead global creative teams and external agency partners to develop culture-defining campaigns, including major events like Prime Day, the Super Bowl, and global holiday campaigns.
  • Partner closely with Amazon Studios, MGM, and Prime Video leadership to align marketing strategies for flagship entertainment properties and cultural moments.

Customer Experience & Insights

  • Act as the ultimate "Customer Obsessed" leader, utilizing deep consumer insights, market research, and behavioral data to anticipate customer needs and shape product and marketing roadmaps.
  • Navigate complex global markets, localizing marketing efforts to resonate with distinct cultural nuances while maintaining a unified global brand identity.

Team Leadership & Culture

  • Attract, develop, and retain a world-class marketing organization of thousands of professionals across performance marketing, brand, creative, PR, and social media.
  • Foster a culture of "Invent and Simplify" within the marketing organization, encouraging bold, high-risk/high-reward campaigns (the "Day 1" mentality).

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience: 15+ years of senior marketing leadership experience, with at least 5 years operating as a CMO or equivalent global marketing leader at a massive, consumer-facing multinational corporation.
  • Scale: Proven track record of managing multi-billion-dollar marketing budgets and leading global teams of 1,000+ employees.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Business, Communications, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Data & Creative Balance: A rare dual-minded approach—highly analytical and data-fluent, yet possessing a world-class portfolio of award-winning, brand-building creative campaigns.
  • E-commerce & Tech Expertise: Deep understanding of the e-commerce landscape, digital subscriptions, and consumer technology hardware.
  • Global Acumen: Extensive experience leading marketing campaigns in highly diverse international markets across North America, Europe, Asia, and emerging territories.
  • Communication: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to write and present the rigorous, data-heavy 6-page narrative memos that drive decision-making at Amazon.
  • Adaptability: High tolerance for ambiguity and the ability to pivot rapidly in a high-stakes, hyper-competitive global environment.

Amazon

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

It’s Always Day 1

At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

Our Leadership Principles

Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
