Location: Hybrid Remote - primarily work from home or Oakland office, with travel to the nine Bay Area counties for in-person events/meetings as needed, and occasional in-person Bay Area staff meetings throughout the year.

Since 1958, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area has provided meaningful, monitored, results-driven, professionally supported one-to-one interactions between youth and screened, qualified adult mentors, helping youth ignite and harness their potential. We serve nearly 500 youth, mentors, and their families annually through our community-based program, and are on a growth trajectory to reach more children and deepen our service levels.

We’re seeking a versatile Marketing and Communications Director who thrives in an environment where no two days are the same. Our ideal candidate has the experience and strategy to implement new marketing technology tools for the agency, craft compelling campaigns that drive holistic engagement and support from diverse stakeholders, develop a formal organization-wide communications strategy and editorial calendar, and increase brand awareness across our region through advertising, media exposure, and strategic partnership development and management.

Key Responsibilities:
- Define marketing strategies and develop and execute comprehensive annual plans to support the agency’s overall objectives with a focus on fund development and volunteer recruitment, conversion and retention goals.
- Effectively manage brand and reputational risk to ensure the internal and external brand is optimally aligned with the organization’s strategic objectives.
- Serve as an organizational leader, providing sophisticated project management to engage the entire organization on marketing and communication initiatives. Mentor, coach and champion departmental goals.
- Strategically select digital tools and build strong processes to create efficiencies, drive marketing efforts and track ROI.
Team Leadership and Collaboration
- Manage and develop a highly collaborative working relationship with one direct report, providing ongoing professional development
- Develop new relationships with external contractors and vendors as needed to meet agency goals, prioritizing cost-effective, quality deliverables.
- Work closely with program, development, and executive teams to ensure cohesive and effective communication efforts, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation and accountability for shared marketing goals.
- Develop new and build on current org-wide systems for content creation, ensuring the collection and dissemination of inspiring stories and fresh organizational news.
- Develop and manage the marketing budget, ensuring cost-effective spending and a strong return on investment.
- Be a key brand ambassador by speaking on behalf of the organization during recruitment or fundraising events, campaigns, and other outward facing opportunities.
Digital Marketing and Online Presence:
- Use digital marketing tools and analytics to optimize online presence and engagement, including SEO, SEM, and social media strategies.
- Develop a plan and project manage a website redesign within 1-2 years from start date, leading site design, content, navigation, traffic and engagement strategies to ensure website and other digital platforms deliver on agency objectives.
- Regularly perform or oversee audits of the agency's online presence across channels to ensure public information is accurate, including current website’s responsiveness to agency goals.
- Work collaboratively with Marketing and Communications Manager in building brand awareness, growing social media followers through organic and paid strategies, increasing engagement, and driving visitors to our channels (website, social media and partnerships)
- Develop and implement strategies for successful lead conversation specific to volunteers and donors
- Use data and analytics to assess the effectiveness of marketing campaigns and strategic partnerships, making data-driven decisions to define and track key performance indicators (KPIs), and adapt plans to meet changing needs and trends
- Provide regular reports to the executive leadership team and board of directors on progress and outcomes related to growth initiatives, with a specific focus on marketing and strategic partnerships
Brand & External Visibility
- Cultivate, maintain and track relationships with media contacts, manage press inquiries, and secure media coverage to enhance the organization’s public profile
- Oversee the creation, supply and distribution of all BBBS brand collateral (recruitment materials, BBBS branded items etc.)
- Create and nurture a solid network of strategic partnerships including owning a personal portfolio of corporate relationships focused on cause marketing to enhance revenue, volunteer acquisition and brand awareness
- Design and coordinate promotional campaigns, public relations and other marketing efforts across channels
Volunteer Recruitment & Acquisition
- Develop strategies for volunteer acquisition, conversion, retention and re-engagement, email, mobile/SMS, digital direct response, etc. including attribution, measurement of ROI across multiple channels, managing spend and performance forecasting
- Partner closely with program leadership to integrate marketing tools with Salesforce database
- Spearhead and oversee execution of campaigns to increase recruitment and retention efforts
- Identify new opportunities for awareness of recruitment needs with a focus on digital and corporate partnerships
Revenue Growth and Fundraising
- Lead cause marketing strategy and relationships including round-up campaigns with corporate partners.
- Lead the production of agency collateral materials to support fundraising efforts including key print pieces (brochures, annual reports) and promotional materials including agency videos, decks, event collateral and donor stewardship materials.
- Partner closely with the fundraising team on executing successful digital and direct mail campaigns and events
Required Qualifications:
- Must have access to vehicle, valid driver’s license, and meet state required automobile insurance minimums
- Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, communications or a related field
- A minimum of 8 years of relevant experience (digital marketing, communications strategy, PR, nonprofit communications or fundraising, etc.)
- Proficiency with Salesforce or similar CRM experience, email marketing platforms
- Strategic thinker with the ability to balance short-term results with long-term organizational goals
- Demonstrated ability to apply logical thought processing to problem solve and recommend solutions
- High level of project management skills and a demonstrated track record and ability to see a project through from vision to successful execution while balancing competing priorities and meeting deadlines
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior management experience
- Proven track record of successfully driving volunteer and/or revenue growth in the nonprofit sector
- Working understanding of SEO, HTML, basic design principles and Google Ads
- Experience generating accurate forecasts and managing budgets
- Track record successfully selecting and managing third-party vendor/contractor relationships and performance
- Proficiency in Microsoft suite Google suite and Adobe (photoshop, indesign) applications and Google Analytics. Ability to learn new technology platforms.
Salary: $95,000 - $120,000 annually
